the new art examines the proposition that there have been significant shifts in the dynamic
of contemporary art. The book examines diversity in approaches to artmaking: it does this from
the point of view of realism about the motivations of individuals—artists, curators/gallerists,
an interested public. the new art—a Rachmaninoff’s publication in association with
Zoo Art Fair—considers some specific recent developments in contemporary art.
the new art has contributions from a range of established and new writers working from bases
within and outside the UK. Topics include curation (e.g. Man in the Holocene), the expansion of
young galleries in London, sustainable art practices, performance and materiality in contemporary
art, artists’ transgressive practices, and writing on artists including: Tomas Saraceno,
Doug Fishbone, Emily Wardill, Tino Sehgal, Anne Bean, Jonathan Monk, Rirkrit Tiravanija,
Bonnie Camplin, Steve Claydon, Los Super Elegantes. the new art examines the background for
change within an ‘emergent’ scene while it discusses individual as well as institutional factors that herald shifts in context. the new art is published October 2006.
