Alem Korkut: Rain

Galerija Balen
Slavonski Brod
March-April 2005

For the exhibition Rain, Alem Korkut (1970) is showing new works that thematically mark a shift from the human figure and portraits characteristic of the artist's recent production, towards sculptural consideration of the representation of nature.

Alem Korkut emerged as one of the most inventive sculptors of the young generation in Croatia. He has especially attracted critical attention for his use of new media to research the methods and processes of traditional sculpture, which he employed in the cycle of works entitled Ego-Trip.

In the exhibition in Kazamat Gallery in Osjiek, in summer 2004, he exhibited the whole opus of that cycle, with the title Ego-Trip: Retrospective. Seven works were shown, made in the last three years, all of which use plaster casts of the artist's head to problematise the modern history of portrait sculpture. In that cycle belongs also the sculptural installation Ego-Trip: Hommage to Rodin, with which he won the grand prix of the Zagreb Salon of Youth in 2004. Alem Korkut was declared the best young Croatian artist of 2004 by the Croatian Association of Visual Artists.
