An innovative transnational community art project by Croatian artist Siniša Labrović involves asking people from across society to intervene on the covers of weekly current affairs magazines to express their idea of happiness.
Posing the question: ‘what is happiness for you?’, the artist invited people from all walks of life to intervene on magazine covers and depict their answer by using artistic techniques of drawing, painting and collage. This collective project, which connects places that once experienced socialism, superimposes personal visions onto a now capitalist reality. By merging press imagery and singular insights, this work emphasises the saturation of the public sphere with commercial values and totalising news management, exposing the gulf between information overload in contemporary society and the straightforwardness of basic human desires.
The project is the result of collaborative research and creative workshops undertaken with groups in Lodz, Prague, Budapest and Zagreb.
